Surprisingly, San Diego became California's first capital (in 1822, under Mexican rule). And she has seen many other intriguing "Firsts," including in 1931 the nation's first desegregation court case; in 1927 Lindbergh's first ever flight in the Spirit of St. Louis; in 1951 the first drive-through restaurant in the country (Jack in the Box); in 1969 an important blood test discovered by UC San Diego researchers against Tay-Sachs disease.

Walk the longest concrete pier on the west coast in the unique community of Ocean Beach. Also find antique stores, homey cafes, tattoo/ piercing parlor, live music at Winston's, bars, coffee shops, bike and surf shops, even a head shop (the Black).
